
CofC Men?s Soccer Team has Season Come to an End in 2-1 defeat to UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference Championship Match

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? The College of Charleston men's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Sunday afternoon, as UNC Greensboro defeated the Cougars, 2-1 in the championship match of the 2008 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championships. The match was played at Alumni Soccer Stadium in Davidson, N.C.
With the loss, the Cougars end the season with a 11-10-0 overall record, while UNC Greensboro improves to 8-11-2 on the year and will represent the Southern Conference in the NCAA Tournament.
In the first period, UNC Greensboro held a 5-2 advantage in shots as the match entered the final minute, but could not net a goal, as Charleston goalie Clark Hankins (Montgomery, Ala.) made three saves.
As the period went into the final minute, the Spartans cracked the scoreless tie with a goal with 14 seconds left on the game clock. Corey Maret scored his second goal of the season after receiving the ball off a Charleston deflection that gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead going into the half.
In the second half, the Cougars came out of the locker room and saw Matt Morris (Anderson, S.C.) knot the game up at one with a goal in the 54th minute off a Zach Prince (Columbia, S.C.) corner kick. The goal was the ninth of the year for Morris.![]()
The match, however, would not remained tied for long, as UNC Greensboro's Tebatso Manyama scored his fourth goal of the season on a breakaway 50 seconds later. Corey Maret was credited with an assist after sending a pass to Mayama.
For the rest of the period, the Cougars had several opportunities to score goals, as they took eight shots. Charleston, however, could not tally a score, as UNC Greensboro hung on to win 2-1.
For the day, UNC Greensboro outshot the Cougars 12-10, while Hankins made five saves in goal for Charleston.
Also, three College of Charleston players were named the Southern Conference Men's soccer All-Tournament team in Morris, Justin Fojo (Lake Mary, Fla.) and Kareem Yearwood (Sousou Lands, Tobago).
