
CofC Women?s Soccer Team Sees Season Come to an End in Shootout Loss at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. ? The College of Charleston women's soccer team saw it season come to an end on Sunday evening, as Samford held a 4-1 advantage on penalty kicks to win in the First Round of the 2008 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championships.
The match was sent to a shootout after both teams battled to a 0-0 draw through 110 minutes of action.
With the loss, the Cougars end the season with a 12-5-4 overall mark, while Samford moves to 9-8-3 overall and advances to the semifinals of the SoCon tournament.
In the first half, the Cougars out-shot Samford 5-2, but were denied on each of their attempts by Bulldog goalie Alyssa Whitehead, who made two saves in the period.
In the second half, The Cougars would once again attack the net and continue to play suffocating defense. Charleston out shot Samford 5-1 in the period, but Whitehead was once again flawless in goal, making two saves.
With the game knotted at 0-0, the match then moved into overtime. In the first overtime period, the Cougars held a 2-1 advantage in shots, but could not cash in on their attempts, as Whitehead made another save in goal.
In the second overtime period, Samford took the only shot recorded in the period and had that blocked out of the goal by Erin Smith. With the game still deadlocked in a scoreless tie after 110 minutes, the game moved to a shootout.
Samford's Paige Lanter was first to go in the shootout and successfully scored. Charleston's Megan Manthey was next up and she was successful on her attempt to knot it up at one.
It was there that Samford took control of the shootout. Tori Delmonico was next to shoot and was successful on her attempt. After Charleston's Katie Browne had her shot saved by Whitehead, Samford's Cindy Spiker connected on her attempt to give Samford a 3-1 advantage.
The Bulldog's then put the match away after Whitehead made another save on a Julie Romanik attempt, which was followed up by Samford's Amber Cress connecting on her attempt that gave the Bulldogs a 4-1 advantage and the win. Samford went a perfect four-for-four in the shootout to take the match.
The 2008 Southern Conference Women's Soccer semifinals and finals will be held at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. next weekend. On Friday, Nov. 7th, action will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. when top-seeded UNC Greensboro faces off with Furman, while Samford and Western Carolina will play in the second semifinal at 7 p.m. The winners of both matches will then face off in the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 9th at 1 p.m.
