
CofC Men?s Soccer Team set for First Round Southern Conference Tournament Tilt at Appalachian State

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston men's soccer team will hit the road to begin the 2008 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championships, as they travel to Appalachian State for a First Round Match-up on Saturday, Nov. 8th. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
The Cougars, who earned the fifth seed in the tournament, dropped their regular season finale to Wofford on Tuesday night, 1-0. The match was the seventh-straight match that the team has played that has been decided by one goal.
With the loss, the Cougars ended the regular season with a 9-9-0 overall record, 3-4-0 in the Southern Conference.
Appalachian State capped off a 10-7-0 regular season with a 2-1 win over UNC Greensboro on Nov. 1st. With a 4-3-0 mark in the SoCon, the Mountaineers earned the fourth seed in this year's tournament.
Appalachian State comes into the tournament riding a three-match winning streak that began on Oct. 21st when the team knocked off ACC-Power Virginia Tech 2-1.
The Cougars are led offensively by senior forward Matt Morris, who has scored six goals on the season and is the team's statistical offensive leader, despite the fact that he has missed seven matches on the season due to injury. Juniors Kareem Yearwood and Zach Prince have scored five and four goals, respectively, on the year to bolster the Cougar offensive attack.
The defensive unit, anchored by seniors Wes Knight, Ryan Kell and Drew Fuzy, has allowed just 24 goals on the year. They are also apart defensive line that has recorded five shutout victories on the season, which was the second best mark in the SoCon during the regular year.
In goal, freshman Clark Hankins has been the team's primary goal keeper throughout the Southern Conference season. He has made 38 saves, recorded a 1.11 goals against average and three shutout victories.
Appalachian State is led offensively by Juan Obregon, who has scored seven goals for the Mountaineers on the year (including two in the team's last game against UNC Greensboro). In goal, keeper Colin Taylor has made 82 saves and recorded a 0.82 goals against average.
On Oct. 1st in the first meeting between the schools on the 2008 season, Appalachian State blanked the Cougars 3-0, as three different Mountaineer players scored goals on the night.
All-time, Charleston leads the series over Appalachian State 9-7. The Cougars are also 3-1 all-time against the Mountaineers in Southern Conference tournament play.
The winner of the match between the Cougars and Mountaineers will advance to the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament, which will be held at Davidson's Alumni Field on Friday, Nov. 14th.
