Tom Kite and his son, David, the College of Charleston's men's assistant golf coach, shot a two-day total of 126 en route to a third place finish in the Del Webb Father-Son Championship at Champions Gate in Orlando this weekend.
The duo shared the lead with Larry and Drew Nelson after firing an opening day 61. The Kites posted a 65 on Sunday. Former College of Charleston women's golfer Gretchen Zoeller teamed with her father Fuzzy to finish 13th with a two-day total of 133.
"David and his father played very well," said Cougar coach Mark McEntire. "During the tournament David and the College of Charleston received some wonderful publicity. David wore our team's uniforms, used a College of Charleston golf bag and represented the College of Charleston very well."
Larry Nelson teamed with his son Drew to win the event firing a 123. Larry Nelson made a 20-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole and went on to a 10-under 62 with his son, Drew, to become the first player to win the Challenge two straight years with different sons.
Nelson, a three-time major champion in the World Golf Hall of Fame, won the Father-Son last year with son Josh. He and Drew also won the tournament four years ago.
