
Cougars Rally to Earn Series Sweep Over Mountaineers, 72-63

Jill Furstenburg scored 18 points, while Deidra Jones added a career-high 15 to lead the College of Charleston women's basketball team back from a late seven-point second-half deficit to defeat the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 72-63 in action tonight in front of 265 fans at the Holmes Convocation Center.
Charleston improves to 13-14 overall and 9-8 in the league. Appalachian State falls to 8-20 and 5-12. The Cougars defeated the Mountaineers for the second time this season for the series sweep, the first in the last five tries. The College of Charleston trailed by seven points, 56-49, with 7:59 remaining before a 10-3 run by the Cougars tied the game 59-59 with 4:17 to go. Appalachian State took the lead back, 63-62, off a jumper by Whitney Tossie with 2:32 remaining. That would be the last points the Mountaineers would score as Charleston used back-to-back three-pointers to take a five-point lead with 1:50 to go. CofC went four-four from the free throw line down the stretch to take the eventual 72-63 win off the 10-0 run. Charleston outscored Appalachian State 23-7 over the final 7:59 of the game. Besides Furstenburg and Jones, three other Cougars posted double-figures in scoring tonight with Tonia Gerty scoring 13 and Nikki Williams and Erika Smith posting 11 each on the night. Williams lead the team with 10 rebounds for her sixth career double-double. Sam Ramirez led Appalachian State with 19 points followed by Tossie with 17, all of which came in the second half. Charleston shot 45.6 percent from the field, including 50.0 percent in the second half. That included an eight-for 21 effort from beyond the three-point arc. Furstenburg tied her career-high, going four-for-eight in three-pointers. Appalachian State shot 39.1 from the field for the game. Charleston out-rebounded the Mountaineers, 44-31, including 29-17 in defensive boards. ASU had less turnovers, 20-12. Charleston went 12-for-15 from the free-throw line, ASU just three-for-five. Charleston next travels to Davidson, Saturday, Mar. 1st for a 12:00 pm game.
