
CofC Blanks GSU, 4-0; Advances In SoCon Championship

Charleston, S.C. -- The 2nd-seeded College of Charleston women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the 2008 Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 win over 7th-seeded Georgia Southern on Friday at the City of Charleston's Farmfield Tennis Center. The Cougars, who improved to 23-3 on the season, set the school's NCAA record for most wins in a season.
Charleston's old NCAA mark was 22-4 in 2003. The school's overall single-season record was set in 1977-78 when the Cougars posted a 25-5 record against NAIA competition.
The Cougars will take on third-seeded Davidson at 3:00 at The Citadel's Earle Tennis Center on Saturday. Georgia Southern finishes the season with an 11-11 record.
After the Cougars won the doubles point, Anna Lee Evans cruised to her 18th consecutive singles win defeating Christine Caforio 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. Charleston built a 3-0 lead in the match when Holly Dowse bested Molly Maddox 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
Charleston clinched its fourth straight win and its 14th win over the last 15 matches when Amanda Becker downed Shea Huxtable 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles play.
