Cougars Open Season with 2-0 Victory Over Jacksonville

Goals by Christy Barrow and Hope Atkinson, along with a two assist performance by Megan Manthey, carried the College of Charleston's women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Jacksonville at Patriots Point Stadium on Friday.

The Cougars, who play host to North Florida at 12:00 on Sunday, improved to 1-0-0. Jacksonville fell to 0-1-0.

"We had some players step up tonight for us," said head coach Kevin Dempsey. "Adjusting to the site change showed experience and maturity on our part. It feels great to win you home opener along with your first win of the season."

Charleston opened the scoring at the nine-minute mark, when Barrow took a Manthey pass, juggled the ball around several Jacksonville defenders, and scored what proved to be the game winner.

The Cougars added the insurance goal in the 86^th minute when Atkinson headed a shot into the net off a Manthey corner kick.

The game was dominated by the Cougar defensive unit, which held Jacksonville to just five shots on goal. Charleston recorded 18 shots, nine of which were on goal.
