
College of Charleston Loses 1-0 to Winthrop

The Cougars (8-8-0, 2-2 SoCon) played in front of 1,081 fans as College of Charleston hosted Mt. Pleasant Recreation Night for local soccer clubs.
The first half started slow with CofC registering three shots and Winthrop striking once. Senior midfielder Steven Nagy took the first shot for the Cougars at the 14:58 mark, drilling a shot from 27 yards out that went low to the right corner before being stopped by Eagles' goalkeeper Enrique Miranda.
With 3:53 to play in the first half, Winthrop junior Miguel Casajuana struck from 16 yards out, slipping past Charleston's Clark Hankins to take a 1-0 lead for the Eagles.
Winthrop threatened to score again 11 minutes into the second period as Matt Lacey made a hard shot from 40 yards out that hit the crossbar.
The Cougars played a physical second half, earning nine corner kicks, including three in the 59th minute of action.
Junior defender Sean Flatley sent one flying from 25 yards out directly in front of the goal at the 86:41 mark but was stopped by Miranda, who tallied two saves on the evening. The win boosted Winthrop to 9-2-2 this year.
The Cougars return to Southern Conference action on Saturday as they host Appalachian State at 2 p.m.
