Elon (12-4-2, 7-2-1 SoCon) struck eight times against Charleston while the Cougars only mustered four shots over 90 minutes. Molly Calpin put the Phoenix on the board early, scoring off a cross from the corner and shooting from five yards out at the 12:07 mark. The score was Calpin's sixth of the season.
After Alix Heinicke hit the crossbar on a shot from a corner kick moments earlier, CofC goalkeeper Sarah Wiggers stopped a second attempt with four minutes remaining in the first half to keep the Phoenix from increasing their 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, freshman midfielder Liz Miller almost evened the score when her shot off a corner kick by Hannah Gmerek went just wide of the far post in the 57th minute.
Wiggers made her second save of the day off a shot by Elon's Brittany Hallberg at 60:23. Freshman Courtney Seltman followed it up three minutes later with Elon's second score of the day, a shot from eight yards in front of the goal. The Cougars were not able to answer and the Phoenix finished the afternoon with a 2-0 victory.
The loss drops Charleston (11-6-1, 7-3 SoCon) to third in the Southern Conference standings. The women play their final regular-season match on Thursday at The Citadel.
