The College of Charleston Strength and Conditioning Department has announced that volleyball's Whitney Russell and men's tennis' Victor Wibreus have been named the program's Lifters of the Month for February.
Russell was chosen because of her consistent positive attitude and drive to become mentally and physically tougher. This semester has been by far the toughest volleyball has encountered the last two years in the weight room. In the last eight weeks her squat max has shot up from 200 to 215, the highest on the team and her vertical jump has increased 2.5" in eight weeks, a huge improvement. She has also done this by herself because of class conflicts during the normal volleyball time slot, which makes it that much harder.
Wibreus was chosen as lifter of the month due to an unyielding work ethic that is rarely achieved by many athletes. During this season, tennis is limited to just two training sessions each week, yet he has found a way to push his limitations, turning weaknesses into strengths. In doing so, his numbers have continued to increase each and every week since returning for the spring semester.
Criteria for eligibility for the award is 1) Attending all workouts and being on time, 2) Consistently working hard, 3) Making a commitment to achieving personal and team goals, 4) Motivating teammates during lifts and conditioning sessions and 5) Maintaining a positive attitude. These attributes help to illustrate what it takes to be a student-athlete at the College of Charleston and demonstrate a dedication to one's sport.
