Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) took two of three sets to help the College of Charleston women's tennis team clinch the 4-3 win over #59-ranked Minnesota in action this afternoon at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, N.C.
The College of Charleston improves to 14-3 while Minnesota falls to 7-5.
After falling behind early with the loss of the doubles point, the Cougars won four singles matches to take the win. Holly Dowse (Tuncury, Australia) defeated Alessandra Ferazzi (6-2, 6-0) at number one, while Keely Mulligan (Miami, Fla.) took Magdalena Wiecha at the number four spot, 6-2 and 7-6. Nina Burgoon (Gastonia, N.C.) won number five singles with the 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over Jackie Sperling. Newman defeated Nitooli Wilkins 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 to clinch the Cougar victory. She was down 4-2 in the third set but stormed back to take the set and victory.
Charleston continues action this afternoon with a match at 6:15 against Lafayette.
