Former professional tennis player Peter Fleming, holder of seven grand slam doubles titles, spend some time with the College of Charleston's men's and women's tennis teams at Patriots Point Tennis Center on Friday.
Fleming, who was in Charleston visiting friends, teamed with John McEnroe to dominate men's doubles play in the 1980s, vaulting to the World No. 1 doubles ranking in 1984. The duo won 50 double titles together, including three U.S. Open championships (1979, 1981 and 1983) and four Wimbledon titles (1979, 1981, 1983 and 1984).
Fleming also played on American Davis Cup winning teams in 1979, 1981 and 1982, and helped the U.S. win the World Team Cup in 1984 and 1985.
"This is a beautiful facility with nine courts and a tremendous viewing area for fans," added Fleming, who won three career singles titles and is a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Hall of Fame. "It's a great place to play college tennis."
"It was a pleasure and a thrill to come out and speak to the (College of Charleston) men's and women's tennis teams," said Fleming, who played at UCLA after transferring from Michigan. "I look back on my college experiences, as a player and student, and it's some of the greatest memories of my life. I hope sharing my experiences helps."
