CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomore middle blocker Sarah Havel (Carmel, Ind.) has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week following a tremendous performance over the weekend that netted her Most Valuable Player honors at the Holiday Inn Charleston Riverview Classic. The award is the first of her collegiate career.
The Carmel, Ind. native was a key reason the Cougars christened Carolina First Arena for volleyball competition this past weekend with a pair of wins against strong opponents in South Florida (6-2) and Lafayette (7-1). Over two matches and seven sets, Havel delivered 22 kills, 19 blocks, five of which were solo, and hit .304.
Among those performances was a double-double against USF, whose only two previous losses had come to No. 4 Florida and No. 9 Minnesota, in which she drilled 12 kills and set a career-high with 10 blocks. Two of those were solo. In the Lafayette match, she was just as dominant as she collected 10 more kills behind a .500 hitting percentage and nearly matched her block total from the day before with nine. This time she collected three solo blocks to help lead CofC to a straight sets victory.
For the week, Havel averaged 3.14 kills and 2.71 blocks per set as CofC claimed the tournament championship with its third straight victory. She becomes the first College of Charleston player to be named Southern Conference Player of the Week this season.
The Cougars continue their schedule on Tuesday, September 22 when they host Charleston Southern at 7 p.m.
