The College of Charleston women's soccer team will take part in the 2009 High Point Tournament on the campus of High Point University this weekend. The Cougars will take on the host Panthers on Friday, Sept. 4th at 7:30 p.m. and close out the weekend with a match against Temple on Sunday, Sept. 6th at 1 p.m.
The Cougars, who are 1-1 on the season, evened their record to 1-1 after defeating Presbyterian on Monday Night, 2-1. Senior Emily Morgan (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored the game-winner for Charleston in the second half. Hannah Gmerek (Anderson, S.C.) also added a goal for the Cougars in the victory.
"This is our first weekend with two games so we'll truly find out about our depth," said head coach Kevin Dempsey. "I believe we have quite a bit this season and we'll need to use it this weekend against two quality opponents."
High Point comes into this weekend with a 0-4 record. In the Panthers last match against Old Dominion this past Sunday, they lost 1-0. Last season, the Cougars knocked off High Point at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium, 1-0 as Megan Manthey scored the game-winner in the second half on a penalty kick.
"When we played High Point last year, it was a tough game, so there's no reason to expect anything different," continued Dempsey. "They'll be organized and we'll have to be better in front of the goal if we want to beat them."
Temple comes into the weekend sporting a 1-1 record and picked up their first win of the season this past Sunday against St. Francis (Pa.), 4-1. The Owls will play Elon in their first game of the tournament on Friday before entertaining the Cougars on Sunday.
Charleston returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 11 when they take on Duquesne in the Virginia Tech Tournament at 3 p.m.
