Charleston Beats Chattanooga, 6-1, for Second Conference Win

One day after snapping Samford's five-game win streak, the Cougars (5-4, 2-0 SoCon) handed the Lady Mocs (2-4, 0-1 SoCon) their first loss at home. Charleston swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. The Cougars shuffled partners as junior Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) paired up with Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand/New Mexico) for the first time at the No. 1 spot. The duo earned an 8-3 win over Emily Hangstefer and Shaina Singh.
Senior Laura Borza (Toronto, Ontario/Mary Ward Secondary) moved up one spot to pair with Anna Lee Evans (Vilas, N.C./Watauga) as the pair took down Jenna Nurik and Grace Robinette, 8-2. Sophomore Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Pope) and freshman Irene Viana (Paris, France/Lycee de Montgeron) moved to 4-3 as the third doubles team, defeating their opponents 8-0 at the No. 3 spot.
CofC won singles matches from the second through the sixth spots. Casey won her first match at the No. 2 spot with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hangstefer. Viana and Borza also jumped up to the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively, to earn wins at their new positions. After claiming the first set with a 6-1 victory, Borza dropped the second set to Beata Knizat of Chattanooga, 6-3. She rebounded to beat her opponent with a decisive 6-0 mark in the third set.
Newman continued to perform well as the fourth seed, boosting her season record to 4-1 from that position after winning her match 7-5, 6-1. Evans picked up her second singles victory with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Lady Mocs' Jennifer Taylor.
The Cougars return home to host the first of their 10 straight home matches at Patriots Point. The team will play Western Carolina on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. before facing Charlotte in a non-conference match later at 3 p.m.
