Wolfpack Overcomes Cougars? Early Lead in Women?s Tennis

The Wolfpack (6-4, 2-1 ACC) won the doubles point despite yielding the top-seeded match. Senior Holly Dowse (Tuncurry, Australia/Forster) and junior Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand/New Mexico) defeated Sanhya Nagaraj and Berkley Brock at the No. 1 spot, 8-5. The victory was the duo's second straight win at the top spot over a pair from a nationally-ranked team. Dowse and Hayman defeated the 31st-ranked pair in the country from Oklahoma, 8-3, yesterday.
Dowse also held her own against Nagaraj, who ranks 51st in the country, at the No.1 singles spot. She took the first set, 6-3, before yielding the final two sets 6-2, 6-1. Dowse was one of four Cougars who pushed their opponents to a third set in the match that lasted over four hours.
Hayman captured the first set 6-1 as a second seed against Lenka Hojckova before falling 6-0, 6-4 in straight sets. Junior Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) claimed a 6-4 first-set victory at the No. 4 spot before her opponent, Daria Petrovic, returned to win the ensuing sets 6-3, 6-1. Rookie Irene Viana (Paris, France/Lycee de Montgeron) edged Diana Mortlock 7-6 in the first set before narrowly losing the following sets 7-6, 10-7.
Charleston (10-6, 4-0 SoCon) plays its third nationally-ranked team in as many days when it hosts No. 27 Princeton Tuesday afternoon at Patriots Point. Fans can follow the action on Live Stats at www.cofcsports.com.
