Charleston got things going in the fourth inning with junior DH Rob Kral (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) starting off the frame reaching base on a fielding error by UNCG 1B Lloyd Enzor and advancing to second on the error. A single to right by sophomore 3B Matt Leeds (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage) moved Kral to third and Rodriguez roped a RBI single to center to score Kral.
The Cougars added to their lead, scoring three times in the fifth to take a 4-0 advantage. With one out, junior CF Cole Rakar (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Wando) reached on a bunt single to third and crossed home a batter later as Kral stroked a RBI double to left center. After Leeds stuck out, Rodriguez singled down the left-field line to score Kral and junior 2B Jesse Mesa (Miramar, Fla./Central Florida JC) followed up with a RBI double to right, plating Rodriguez.
CofC put up a single run in the sixth on a RBI single by Leeds, before UNCG broke through with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Harry Slade plated Kris Richards with a RBI single through the left side, while Ed Jayjack added a RBI groundout to first with runners at second and third. Slade would score on a wild pitch by sophomore starter David Peterson (Walnut Creek, Calif./Los Comas) to cut the Cougars' lead to 5-3.
The Spartans added a run in the eighth on a RBI double to right center by Zach Leach on a 3-2 count with two outs off junior reliever Heath Hembree (Cowpens, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist College). CofC answered with an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Holler lined a RBI double down the left-field line to score sophomore pinch-runner Thomas Brittle (Cross, S.C./Berkeley). UNCG rallied once again scoring a run in the ninth on a throwing error by Hembree, but Hembree got the final out of the inning with runners at the corners.
Peterson evened his record at 2-2, tossing 6.2 innings and allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Hembree picked up his fourth save of the season, scattering three hits in 1.1 innings with one unearned run. Tyler Hollstegge took the loss for the Spartans, allowing four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings.
The Cougars return to action Wednesday afternoon as they travel to North Charleston, S.C. to face local rival Charleston Southern University. The non-conference tilt is set for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
