
Late Goal Downs Men's Soccer

COLUMBUS, OHIO - The College of Charleston men's soccer team fell, 1-0, to No. 16 Penn State in the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic hosted by Ohio State in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Nittany Lions scored with just 2:34 remaining in regulation to come away with the victory.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 0-2-0 on the season while the Nittany Lions remained unbeaten at 2-0-0.
The Cougars weathered Penn State's 21 shots attempts before ultimately allowing the goal on the Nittany Lions' 22nd attempt. Penn State put 10 shots on frame. Charleston attempted five shots, three on goal.
Corey Hertzog scored the goal for Penn State when he fired a shot from the left side of the box inside the far post. Drew Cost and Matheus Braga had assists on the play. The goal was Hertzog's third of the year. Hertzog personally accounted for eight of Penn State's shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Kees Heemskerk (Zaandam, Holland) gave a full 90 minutes and registered 8 saves.
The Cougars will play in another tournament, the Furman Diadora / Spinx Invitational, in Greenville, S.C., over the weekend of Friday, Sept. 10. The Cougars will play Stetson on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Detroit Mercy on Sunday at 12 p.m.
