BOONE, N.C. - Despite running in wet and windy conditions, the College of Charleston men's and women's cross country teams ran well Friday at the Blue Ridge Open hosted by Appalachian State. The men's team finished 10th while the women's squad finished 13th out of the 26 schools that competed.
In the men's race the five CofC runners who scored for the team were within 20 places, led by sophomore Andrew Nelson in 47th place in a time of 26 minutes and 24 seconds. His pace was 5:19/mile for the 8K race.
Seniors David Lamberson and Eric Robertson finished 55th and 57th respectively as Lamberson crossed the finish line in 26:36 and Robertson finished in 26:38.
On the women's side, sophomore McKenna Nokes led the pack as she finished in 19:23 for the 5K race for 42nd place out of 177 runners.
With the absence of two runners usually in the top-five in Dena O'Brien and Hayley McMahon (racing on Sunday at the Pre-National meet in Terre Haute, Ind.) sophomore Dannielle Hobbs stepped up as the team's number two runner as she finished 60th in 19:37.
Freshman Danielle Sams (74th, 19:52) and sophomore Elle Brewer (85th, 20:08) also ran well for the Cougars.
O'Brien and McMahon will run Sunday at 11:40 a.m. in the Pre-Nationals 6K race on the course that will host the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
The next race after that will be the Southern Conference Championship, hosted by the College of Charleston Oct. 29 at Trophy Lakes on Johns Island.
