O?Brien to Compete in NCAA East Prelim

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Freshman Dena O'Brien will represent the College of Charleston at the NCAA East Preliminary of the Track & Field Championships this week hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
The meet is scheduled for May 26-28 with O'Brien's 5,000-meter race Saturday May 28 at 8:05 PM.
O'Brien has the 19th best time in the field of 48 runners with her personal best and school record of 16:21.35, which she ran March 25 at the Raleigh Relays.
The race will consist of two sections of 24 runners with the top five from each heat and the next two fastest times qualifying for the NCAA Championships June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
O'Brien has set seven school records this season and her coach Amy Seago thinks she has improved dramatically.
"Dena is doing workouts now that I don't even know if she thought she would be capable of doing at the beginning of this season," Seago said. "I'm very proud of the dedication she has put in this year and I feel like she is ready to have a great race."
