
Four Championship Titles Claimed By Cougars at CofC Invitational

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team claimed three of the doubles flights and one of the singles flights on the final day of tournament play at the Ninth Annual CofC Invitational held on Sunday at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
The first championship title for CofC went to the Newman sisters on Sunday morning. Senior Caroline Newman and junior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) claimed an 8-2 decision over Alexandra Walters and Yvonne Hubler of Charleston Southern in the A2 doubles final.
Freshmen Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) and Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.), both whom made their CofC debut at this weekend's tournament, captured an A1 doubles championship victory over Mihaela Bunea and Diana Mortlock of Coastal Carolina, 9-7.
Junior Irene Viana (Paris, France) teamed with senior Katie Lee (Brisbane, Australia) to finish third in the A2 doubles flight defeating Madelie Janse Van Rensburg and Rebecca Kirven of Southern Conference rival Samford, 8-1.
Sophomores Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) and Jamie Harrell (Charleston, S.C.) edged Ginny Johnson and Iveta Guneva of UNC Charlotte, 8-1, in the B2 doubles final.
Individually, Katie Lee topped fellow teammate Kambourelis for the A3 singles title winning the second-set tiebreaker, 6-3,7-6 (4), in the championship match.
The Cougars will take a break from tennis action and compete next month at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships hosted by the University of North Carolina on Oct. 20-24 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
