Newman Places Third In Top Singles Flight at Wake Forest Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - College of Charleston women's tennis player Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) reached the semifinals and placed third in the top singles flight at the three-day Wake Forest Invitational held on Oct. 5-7 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.

Newman, a senior and the Cougars' top returner on the squad, defeated Audrey Wooland of West Virginia, 6-4, 6-2, and Alex Whitehead of UNCG, 6-2, 6-3, in straight sets in the first two tournament rounds, but fell to Antonia Kolovou by a count of 6-3, 6-3, in the semifinals. She later won a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Karolina Chernaya of Campbell in the third-place consolation match held on Sunday.

Newman and sophomore Grace Baker (Charlotte, N.C.) were competing individually for the Cougars in the fall tournament. Baker advanced to the quarterfinals of Flight D singles with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Iveta Guneva of UNC Charlotte in the Round of 16. She later lost to Emily Mathis of West Virginia, 7-5, 7-5, in the quarterfinals.

In doubles competition, Baker and Newman went 2-1 for the tournament in the top doubles flight with wins over Anna Ekelund and Lisa Grosselius of UNCC, 8-5, in the Round of 16, and Mandy Brown and Stefanie Villajuan of Louisville, 9-7, in consolation play.

CofC will next compete at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships hosted by North Carolina on Oct. 19-22 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
