CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's track & field team split up their team and competed at two meets, over 500 miles apart, as both groups had successful outings this weekend. A few athletes competed at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York, while the majority of the team competed at the Kent Taylor Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Sophomore Dena O'Brien started the day off strong for the Cougars as she won the 5,000-meter race at the New Balance Invitational. O'Brien crossed the finish line in 16:40.39, breaking her previous school record of 16:46 that she set when she won the 2011 Southern Conference Indoor Championship last year.
O'Brien's time was six seconds faster than the second-place finisher and over 30 seconds faster than her time at this same meet last year.
The Cougars had a trio of top-20 finishes led by freshman Hayley McMahon's 19th place finish in the mile run as she clocked a time of 5:07.96, the fourth fastest time in school history for the event.
Senior Alyssa D'Orazio ran the third best 800-meter time in school history as she crossed the finish line in 2:16.36 for 20th place. Also finishing in 20th place was fellow senior Kristen Wolfe in the 3,000-meter run in 10:25.20, the eighth fastest time in school history.
At the Kent Taylor Invitational in Chapel Hill, freshman Tiffany Sisk finished fourth in the shot put with a heave of 12.33m (40-05.50 feet). Sisk, who holds the school record in the event, recorded the third best mark in school history.
Sophomore Christa Horrocks also earned herself a place in the school record books with her performance in the 400-meter dash. Horrocks ran 1:00.90 to finish in eighth place. Her time is the ninth fastest time in CofC history.
Fellow sophomore Dana Walsh finished 11th in the 800-meter with a time of 2:25.11.
The Cougars will have one final tune-up before the Southern Conference Indoor Championship, as they travel to Clemson, S.C. for the Tiger Paw Invitational Feb. 10-11.
