CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston senior Emily Smith continues her outstanding season as she has made the field of 48 in the high jump for the NCAA East Prelim May 24-26 hosted by the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.
Smith, who holds both the indoor and outdoor school records in the high jump, won both titles at the Southern Conference Championships this past year.
"We are really proud of Emily for this accomplishment," CofC Head Coach Amy Seago said. "After winning the conference titles this is a great way to finish her senior year. We wish her the best for a great meet in Jacksonville next week and feel she has what it takes to advance from there."
Smith has experience on this level as she qualified for the NCAA East Regional as a freshman in 2009 and finished eighth in the competition.
"I am very proud of Emily Smith for her accomplishments in her senior season of track and field," said Smith's high jump coach and CofC assistant Heather Schmidt. "She is a month away from wrapping up a stellar career at the College of Charleston. She is the most decorated athlete this program has ever seen in its ten year history and I couldn't think of a better student, athlete, and person to be on our school record books."
The NCAA holds an East and West Prelim, with the West meet taking place in Austin, Texas. The top 12 athletes from each Prelim earn spots for the NCAA Outdoor Championship June 6-9 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
"Emily has achieved on the conference and national level from her very first season with CofC back in 2008 and it has come full circle as she is one week away from competing in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Championships," Schmidt said. "Her work ethic, dedication, and daily interest in being a student of this event has enabled her impressive longevity as a collegiate high jumper."
