Cougars Win Three Championship Flights at CofC Invitational

The tournament, in its 11th year, saw senior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) become the first two-time winner in the top singles flight as she defeated Barbora Krtickova of defending NCAA Division II national champion Armstrong Atlantic State, 6-3, 6-4, in Sunday's A1 singles final. Newman previously won the title in Fall of 2010 and made the finals last year.
Sophomore Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) claimed the championship title in the B1 singles flight with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set decision over Jen Miller of Stetson, while sophomore Grace Baker (Charlotte, N.C.) bested MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell of Stetson, 6-3, 6-3, in the B2 singles final. Baker held her first two opponents of the tournament without a game over the course of four-straight sets.
"I'm so proud of our players, especially Christin Newman," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "The two players she beat from Armstrong Atlantic (Barbora Krtickova and Aleksandra Filipovski) were former top 500 in the world players and ranked No. 8 and No. 9 in the NCAA Division II singles rankings, so those were tremendous wins for her. Overall, I'm really proud of our team and the six other teams in the field. Everyone competed very hard and provided a great competitive tournament environment this weekend."
The Cougars will continue fall tournament play at the Wake Forest Invitational on Oct. 5-7 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
