WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to UNC Wilmington at the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
CofC (2-11, 0-4 CAA) was outshot, 16-6, in the affair but still provided an attractive brand of possession soccer.
“This was a tale of two teams battling for a conference match,” said head coach Christian Michner. “The difference was that they were ready to compete as hard as they could for 90 minutes and we simply were not. We had excellent portions of play but we let down in a couple key moments and they capitalized.
“UNCW is a good team and they were fully committed to battling for 90 minutes. If we're going to be successful in this league we need to pick it up and figure it out.”
The teams battled through a scoreless first half, but just over a minute into the second period Katrina Guillo made a short cross in from the right wing and Nicole Costa headed the ball into the back of the net for the game's only goal.
The Cougars were paced on offense by Michaela Herrmann (Centennial, Colo.) and Sarah Cardamone (Downingtown, Pa.) with two shots apiece.
Freshman Lauren Killian (Blythewood, S.C.) went the distance between the pipes and made two saves in the contest.
The Cougars head to Virginia next weekend for CAA contests at James Madison on Friday, Oct. 18 and William and Mary on Sunday, Oct. 20.
