CHARLESTON, S.C. – After having two of its very own qualify for the 2013 NCAA Men's Golf LSU Regional for the first time in a decade and rising-sophomore Josh Lorenzetti (Columbia, S.C.) closing out the program's final season in the Southern Conference as the tournament individual champion, the College of Charleston men's golf team is ready to build on last year's success as a new member of the Colonial Athletic Association in 2013-14.
CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire has put together a schedule that will challenge the Cougars throughout the upcoming fall and spring seasons. CofC will open the school year for the first time at the Navy Fall Classic hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy on Sept. 7-8 in Annapolis, Md., followed by the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic hosted by Notre Dame on Sept. 23-24 in South Bend, Ind., and the Firestone Invitational hosted by Akron on Oct. 7-8 in Akron, Ohio.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Cougars will play host to the most-competitive field ever assembled for The Invitational at The Ocean Course on Oct. 27-29 on Kiawah Island, S.C.
“We are excited to start a new season and be a member of a new conference,” McEntire said. “We have been talking about it for a very long time. We will open up the season at the Naval Academy and later travel to Firestone which is every golfer's dream. Tiger Woods has won there (Firestone Country Club) eight times and so did Adam Scott last year. From a recruiting standpoint, our players will experience the feel of playing on several world-championship golf courses throughout the season as we continue to get our program going in the right direction.”
CofC will commence its spring slate at the SunTrust Gator Invitational hosted by Florida on Feb. 15-16, 2014 in Gainesville, Fla. The Cougars will also compete at the USF Invitational hosted by South Florida on March 2-4 in Tampa, Fla., The Schenkel hosted by Georgia Southern on March 14-16 in Statesboro, Ga., The Hootie hosted by Bulls Bay Golf Club on March 23-25 in Awendaw, S.C., and the Mason Rudolph hosted by Vanderbilt on April 4-6 in Nashville, Tenn.
This year's CAA Men's Golf Championship will be held at St. James Plantation on April 25-27, 2014, in Southport, N.C. Last season, the Cougars placed third as a team at the SoCon Championship, where Lorenzetti became the first true freshman in program history to win the overall tournament.
