CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's golf team welcomes sophomore transfer John Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) to its program for the upcoming 2013-14 season.
Jonas previously played his rookie season at LSU as a 5-foot-6 nationally-ranked prep prospect out of The Bolles School. As a freshman for the Tigers, he made two tournament appearances competing as an individual. Jonas earned his first career Top-10 finish tied for third on the leaderboard at the 2013 South Alabama Individual Tournament held at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Club in Mobile, Ala.
“John is the complete player,” CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. “We are excited to add him to our roster. John was very heavily-recruited and going into college was ranked No. 59 in the Class of 2012 by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard and No. 80 by the AJGA Polo Junior Golf Rankings. I look for him to make an immediate impact to our program. We have a very tough schedule this year and will lean on his experience and consistent play to get us to the postseason.”
Jonas earned a 2011 season-best finish in a tie for fourth at the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Junior at Savannah Quarters. He also picked up a pair of Top-10 finishes in AJGA events during the 2010 season tied for second at the AJGA Accusport Championship and tied for eighth at the AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T. Jonas competed in other prestigious events such as the Bobby Chapman Junior Championship, Foot Joy Invitational, HP Boys Championship, Junior Players Championship and the Western Junior Championship.
A two-year co-captain of the boy's golf team at The Bolles School, Jonas helped lead the Bulldogs to the Florida Class 1A State Championship title in 2011 with a four-stroke victory over Plantation American Heritage. He tied for third place on the individual leaderboard at the 2011 Florida Class 1A State Championship with a 2-under par 142. It ended a 72-year drought as The Bolles School captured its first state championship in golf for the first time since 1939. Jonas also finished as the Region 2-1A co-medalist with a score of 4-under 68 at Eagle Harbor during his senior season.
