DAVIDSON, N.C. – On the final day of a rigorous three-match road swing, the College of Charleston women's tennis team fell to the highly-touted Demon Deacons of Wake Forest University on Monday at the Indoor Tennis Center.
The Cougars (1-2) have opened their 2014 campaign against three high-caliber opponents, having already faced South Carolina on Saturday and Davidson on Sunday.
The College got off to a slow start in doubles and the Demon Deacons, bolstered by the No. 8-ranked recruiting class in the nation, took advantage, claiming all three matches to seal the point. The closest the Cougars came was on court three, where Brooke McAmis (Greensboro, N.C.) and Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) lost 6-4 to the Wake Forest pairing of Kimmy Guerin and Andrea Retolazo.
In singles play, the Cougars showed tremendous heart, pushing the Demon Deacon to a third set in four of six matches.
Playing under experimental guidelines, where the traditional best-of-three-set format has made way to a third-set superbreaker to 10 points, the Cougars fought well, but Wake Forest was two strong taking three of the four.
“We got off to a slow start today,” said College of Charleston Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. “However, with that being said, I'm proud of the way our girls bounced back. If there is such thing as a moral victory – today was one.”
In the match of the day for the Cougars, McAmis, playing vaunted competition in Samantha Asch, won in thrilling fashion, 4-6, 7-6 (11-9), 11-9.
“Brooke (McAmis) showed a lot of character today,” said Anastopoulo. “She is getting better at handling the pressure and after some fortune in the early going, was playing some really high-level tennis in the third set. I'm proud of her.”
Next up for the Cougars is the annual Alumni Match, to be held Sat, Jan. 25, at 10:00 a.m., before official competition resumes for the Cougars on Sun, Feb. 2, against the defending Atlantic-Sun champion Ospreys of North Florida.
