Women?s Tennis Knocks Off Defending Champions William & Mary in Colonial Debut

COLUMBIA, S.C. – In their inaugural conference match as members of the Colonial Athletic Association, the College of Charleston women's tennis team captured their biggest win of the season so far, knocking off the No. 55- ranked, defending conference champion Tribe of William & Mary, 4-3 at the Carolina Tennis Facility.
“I'm thrilled with how we performed,” said College of Charleston director of tennis, Angelo Anastopoulo. “William & Mary has been the premier team in the Colonial for quite some time. As a coach, I realize that we had some things go in our favor and I still think there are some areas in which we need to improve, but overall, I'm very pleased.”
The College (3-3) started the match strong, taking the doubles point following great performances from the Cougar pairings of Kelly Kambourelis and Mara Argyriou, as well as Samantha Maddox and Jamie Harrell, who dispatched their opponents, 8-4 and 8-5, respectively.
In singles, Kelly Kambourelis put in the display of the day, downing defending conference player of the year, Maria Belaya, 1-6, 6-1, 6-0.
“Kelly was very good today,” said Anastopoulo. “We had a very clear game plan going in and I'm proud of the way she stuck to it. It was a long term investment, and she pulled it out. It's a terrific win for her.”
On court No. 5, Katherine Schofield ousted Sydney Smith in two sets, 6-1, 6-3 before Brooke McAmis clinched the memorable win for the Cougars, vanquishing Leeza Nemichnov, 6-3, 6-3 on court No. 2.
Next up for the College is a Saturday, Mar. 1, home date with Stetson, at the College of Charleston Tennis Complex at Patriots Point, where doubles play is set to begin at 10 a.m.
