CHARLESTON, S.C. – After having three home matches cancelled this season, the No. 62-ranked College of Charleston women's tennis team finally opened their home slate today at the CofC Tennis Complex, where they downed the University of Louisiana, 7-0.
“It was a good match,” said College of Charleston director of tennis, Angelo Anastopoulo. “Coach Greg (Harkins) has done a terrific job with the program at Louisiana. His team plays with enthusiasm, spirit and they don't give up many free points. For us, it was one of the better matches we've played. There are still a few areas I would like to see us improve in, but we will continue to work and get better.”
The College (4-3) started well after taking two of three doubles matches. CAA women's tennis player of the week Kelly Kambourelis and freshman Cypriot Mara Argyriou claimed victory on court two, before Jamie Harrell and Samantha Maddox clinched the point with an 8-6 win over the Ragin Cajun duo of Cremers and Way.
In singles, the Cougars played very well, losing only two sets en route to sweeping all six matches.
After Maddox and Kambourelis quickly dispatched of their opponents on courts four and one, respectively, Brooke McAmis clinched the match for the Cougars with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Louisiana junior Nelo Phiri.
Also impressive for The College was Argyriou, who – playing on court three – downed Melissa Burckhartt, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
“Mara was relaxed out there today,” said Anastopoulo. “She played two really good sets. We know she can play at that level. Her consistency will come with maturity and experience. I'm proud of the way she competed.”

LOOKING AHEAD TO TOMORROW: THE COLLEGE VS. EAST TENNESSEE STATE
Scouting the Buccaneers:
East Tennessee State comes to Charleston on Monday for what will mark The College's third match this season against a team who won their conference just a year ago (Winthrop and William & Mary being the other two, both of whom the Cougars defeated). The Buccaneers are just 3-7 on the season but have faced a challenging schedule thus far having competed against four ITA top-100 ranked teams already this season in South Carolina, Va. Tech, Kentucky and most recently against No. 47-ranked Virginia Commonwealth. The Buccaneers wins have come against Western Carolina, Eastern Kentucky and CofC's old Southern Conference foe, Appalachian State. Seven of eight players on the ETSU roster come from overseas. Doubles play is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.

On facing the Bucs…
“ETSU is a good team. They have played a tough schedule, just like us, and we expect them to be a good challenge for us. Our girls will have to compete and stay focused – I'm really looking forward to it.”
