MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team picked up it's seventh straight win on Saturday, downing an under-strength Tulane Green Wave team, 4-3, at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
Tulane (4-15), playing with only five student athletes due to injuries, were unable to field three full doubles pairings, meaning that the Cougars only needed to take one of the remaining two flights to win the doubles point.
After being pushed to a tie-break in both matches, it was the Cougar pairing of Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) and Mara Argyriou (Limassol, Cyprus) who clinched the point for The College, grinding out a lengthy 8-7 (7-4) victory.
In singles, the Green Wave again had to concede on court six, but were dominant on courts one and two where Kambourelis and sophomore Booke McAmis (Greensboro, N.C.) were quickly dismissed by Ipek Birol and Jacqui Katz, 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-3, respectively. However, after Katherine Schofield (Franklin, Tenn.) defeated Margaux Hyman, 6-0, 6-2 on court five, junior Samantha Maddox clinched the match for the Cougars with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Emily Dvorak on court four to give the Cougars (13-6) their seventh win on the trot.
“We played really well on courts four and five,” said CofC director of tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. “However, Tulane is going through some injury problems at the moment, and that was certainly the difference in the match. I hope that we are never in the position they are – down a player and having to default a match in both singles and doubles – but if we ever are…I hope we handle it as well as they did today. They really showed a lot of heart.”
Saturday's win rounds out the most congested stretch of the season for the Cougars who have now played six matches in five days. The Cougars will have a week of rest to focus on their studies before welcoming Jacksonville State to Charleston next Saturday, March 29 at 10 a.m. (ET) at the CofC Tennis Center.
