MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Following a lengthy rain delay, the College of Charleston women's tennis team picked up their eighth consecutive win on Saturday afternoon, downing the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, 6-1, at the College of Charleston Tennis Center.
Originally scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., early morning rains pushed the start time to 11:30 a.m. Furthermore, with weather still a concern at the start of the match, both teams agreed to forego the traditional match format and begin play with singles.
Showing no signs of rust from their week off, the No 72-ranked Cougars (14-6) jumped out to a quick start in singles play, led by freshman Cypriot Mara Argyriou who quickly dismissed of Claudia Marsala, 6-0, 6-1. Argyriou, who enrolled at The College at just 16 years of age, has now won five of her last six singles matches. Franklin Tennessee native Katherine Schofield then gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead after dispatching of Isidora Knezevic on court four, 6-1, 6-1.
After Grace Baker downed Zoe Bizinos on court six, 6-4, 6-3, the Cougars closed out the match when Jenny Falcone defeated Danielle Kerinda, 7-5, 6-2, on court five to give the Cougars their eighth consecutive victory.
With clear skies and the match already decided, the two teams decided to play the doubles point, where the Cougars easily won on all three courts, 6-2, 6-1, and 6-0, to end the match.
“The team played well,” said CofC director of tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. “We appreciate Coach Bailey and his team for their patience today. The weather was not ideal, but I think our team handled it well. Starting with singles can be tough, especially when it's something that you're not used to doing, but ultimately, we try to instill a degree of flexibility in to our team and I think they responded well. Katherine (Schofield) and Mara (Argyriou) were both very good today and we appreciate all the parents who came out to the match as well – we had a good crowd.”
Next up for the Cougars is a Friday, April 4 conference road showdown with UNC Wilmington at the UNCW Tennis Complex, where doubles play is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
