CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer program and head coach Ralph Lundy have announced the addition of Danny Irizarry to the coaching staff to serve as an assistant coach and assist the program in all facets.
“Danny is a tremendous coach who our players are going to benefit from greatly,” said Lundy. “He comes from great pedigree and his recruiting ability and knowledge of the game are going to be great assets to our program moving forward. He knows how to play a simple, direct brand of soccer, and our players will do well to use him as a role model in their playing style.”
Irizarry, a former All-Big Ten Conference performer at Ohio State, joins the program after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at George Washington. There –similar to his expected impact at the College – he was responsible for recruiting, scouting, training, camp organization, fundraising, film editing, NIKE purchasing, travel organization, and student-athlete academic support.
“I'm excited to join an established soccer program and university such as the College of Charleston,” said Irizarry. “I'm eager to accomplish great things with a fantastic group of players and staff. Working with Coach Lundy is an opportunity that I am grateful for both as a coach and person.”
On the pitch, Irizarry completed a highly decorated career as a string puller in the Buckeye midfield from 2005-09. He was a national all-freshman selection in 2005, and twice named All-Big Ten during his career. In 2007, he guided the team to a Big Ten Championship and a run to the College Cup National Championship, where they ultimately fell 2-1 to Wake Forest. The following season, he captained and led OSU in scoring with six goals as a senior and was rated the third-best collegiate midfielder in the country by College Soccer News, a leading publication on NCAA soccer.
Irizarry earned international experience with the Puerto Rico National Team during qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, earning a cap in a 1-0 victory over the Dominican Republic.
After his playing days, Irizarry served his alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach in the 2009 fall season, aiding the Buckeyes to another Big Ten Championship.
Irizarry did a stint coaching at the club level from 2009-11 with the Columbus Crew Juniors and Concorde Fire Soccer Club near his hometown of Lawrenceville, Ga.
He then became a graduate assistant at CofC's former Southern Conference rival Georgia Southern for the 2011-12 seasons where he planned training sessions, scouted opposition and edited film.
Irizarry holds a National `B' License from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).
