DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team was unable to overcome a 2-0 deficit to Seattle in the finale of the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic at Blackbaud Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Redhawks punished the Cougars for two costly turnovers in the Cougars' defensive end, leading to goals on both occasions.
“They're a good quality team but we are making so many mistakes, many of them unforced,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “We're playing hard, but, just like Friday night, we didn't assert ourselves in the first half and in the second half we tried to play catch up.
“We are 0-2; we have to step up and do better. That's the bottom line. We aren't playing so well. I take responsibility and I have to get it right.”
The first came in the sixth minute when Hamza Haddadi was the beneficiary of a Cougar giveaway and ran directly at goal before feeding the ball to Brady Ballew, eventual tournament MVP. Ballew then scored across the goal mouth to immediately give the Redhawks the advantage.
Less than two minutes into the second period, the uphill climb got steeper for the Cougars as SU played a ball into the box which the Cougars redirected away from its intended target, but unfortunately it fell directly to Ballew who used the opportunity to secure his brace.
The Cougars were the more authoritative team for large spans of the game, but were never able to crack SU keeper Shane Haworth.
Freshman Sebastian Gordillo showed glimpses of what looks to be an electrifying career by putting a charge into five shot attempts, three of which required saves out of Haworth with the remaining two creeping inches off frame.
Fellow rookies Brian Kilgallon and Cesar Murillo were named to the Aaron Olitsky All-Tournament Team for their dedication to defense over all 180 minutes of the two games.
