KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – In the first tournament of the fall season, the College of Charleston men's golf team placed sixth overall carding a three-round score of 291-304-293—888 (+24) on the final day of The Invitational at The Ocean Course held at the Kiawah Island Resort.
Junior John Jonas' (Jacksonville, Fla.) 66 was the lowest round of the 2014 tournament which was one stroke shy of the tournament record held by Lee McCoy of Georgia (65 in 2013). It marked his career-low round with nine birdies and he finished the tournament tied for 6th at four-under.
Sophomore William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.) also had a very strong tournament as he ended with a three-round score of 74-74-71—219 (+3) and finished tied for 14th. Senior Zach Munroe (Charlotte, N.C.) managed to crack the top 25 as well, shooting 71-76-77—224 (+8) to put him in a tie for 25th.
“That was a fantastic round for John Jonas today,” CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. “Sixty-six is always a great score but it's especially impressive that he played so well at such a difficult course. I'm a little disappointed with the team result but I can't be too mad about finishing just outside of the top five against such a tough field.”
No. 32-ranked South Florida won the team championship with a three-round score of 282-284-284—850 (-14) followed by runner-up No. 42 Georgia State (+13). No. 46 Georgia Southern took third at +15 and Troy and No. 27-ranked Kentucky rounded out the top five with score of +18 and +19.
As a team, USF also recorded the lowest-team round in tournament history with a first-round 282 which was previously held by Georgia (283) in 2013.
No. 39-ranked Chase Koepka of South Florida claimed individual medalist honors with an impressive three-round score of 69-68-71—208 (-8) and Bright Julamool of Western Carolina took second with 69-67-73—209 (-7). Jared Bettcher of Troy, No. 61-ranked J.T. Poston from Western Carolina and Scott Wolfes of Georgia Southern tied for third at five-under.
The Cougars will next be in action on Oct. 6-7 at the Firestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
