WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – The College of Charleston volleyball team swept William and Mary 3-0 (25-21, 29-27, 25-19) at Kaplan Arena on Saturday. Freshman Allison Beckman recorded 44 assists; the most by a Cougar in a three-set match since rally point scoring was introduced and sets were reduced to 25 points in 2008.
The record comes weeks after sophomore Mackenzie Cooler posted 41 assists, the third-highest mark, against Bryant on Sept. 19 against Bryant. It also came 48 hours from Devon Rachel's record-breaking .833 hitting percentage performance against Elon on Thursday.
“I'm really happy about the overall performance of the team. It's encouraging anytime you can go on the road and win 3-0,” head coach Jason Kepner said. “Allie did a great job of feeding our hot hitters. 44 assists in three sets is a great performance by any setter.”
Trailing 10-9 in the opening set, Kayla Tronick blocked a Tribe attack spurring a 10-3 CofC run. Allison Beckman secured the Cougars 25-21 win with an ace, she would earn another in the second set to give her 19 on the season, a team high and fifth-best mark in the Colonial Athletic Association. Freshman Kennedy Madison was hot early as she notched five kills in the set.
Coming of her recording-breaking performance on Thursday, where she set a school record with a .833 hitting percentage, Rachel was again solid for the Cougars. For the match she recorded a game-high 20 kills and also turned in 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. It was a back-and-forth affair late, but a pair of kill from Melissa Morello and another from Rachel put the set away.
Seven more kills from Rachel helped secure the third set and handing the Cougars their third consecutive victory. Morello finished with 19 kills and 10 digs. Britney Vallez paced CofC with 19 digs.
With the loss, William and Mary fell to 7-12 and 1-5 in CAA play.
The College (11-8, 3-2) will return to action over the weekend with a pair of matches at TD Arena. The Cougars host James Madison on Friday at 7 p.m. then Towson on Sunday at 1 p.m.
