CHARLESTON, S.C. – Less than a week after setting a school record with 44 assists in a three-set win over William and Mary, Allison Beckman set a new College of Charleston high-water mark on Friday with 68 assists in a five-set match. It wasn't enough, however, as James Madison walked away with a 3-2 (27-29, 25-27, 25-22, 25-22, 15-13) victory at TD Arena.
Beckman recorded 44 assists in a 3-0 win over William and Mary on Saturday and responded by carrying the team with 68 on Friday. The mark was the most since Taeler Davis posted 62 in five sets twice in 2012. Beckman, a native of Apex, N.C., leads the team with 591 assists on the season.
“I'm proud of Allie, I though she played well,” head coach Jason Kepner said. “It's obviously disappointing to lose a match like this after going up 2-0. We'll have to rebound quickly and play a solid game on Sunday.”
CofC (11-9, 3-3 CAA) battled back from late deficits to take each of the first two sets, but a series of defensive miscues cost them the third and fourth. The Cougars led 4-1 in the deciding set before a James Madison (17-3, 7-0) timeout spurred a 4-1 run. The Dukes six of the final eight points to take the match.
Freshman Kennedy Madison record a career-high 23 kills while Mellisa Morello posted her 13th double-double of the season with 19 kills and 11 digs. Kayla Tronick also recorded a career-high with 15 kills.
Sophomore Britney Vallez turned in 30 digs, a game-high. Devon Rachel chipped in with 12 kills.
The Cougars will return to action on Sunday as they take on Towson at 1 p.m. at TD Arena.
