Box Score BOISE, IDAHO – Senior forward Jackie Luna-Castro's homecoming to Idaho was spoiled Monday, as the Boise State Broncos (2-0) proved too much to handle for the College of Charleston Cougars (1-1), who fell 38-61.
After hanging tough through more than a quarter of play and going up 12-9, things began to slip away in the final eight minutes of the quarter. Boise State caught fire from the field with a 9-of-12 shooting display to close out the half, resulting in the Broncos reeling off a 20-6 run to head into the locker room with the scoreboard reading 29-18. The Cougars would never quite recover.
“I thought we were a bit out of sorts and weren't really playing to our strengths,” head coach Candice M. Jackson said. “Their pressure bothered us early on, and we were never able to recover the way we should have.”
Luna-Castro scored six points and added five boards, three steals and a block in her homecoming. Early foul-trouble limited her usage a bit, but she nonetheless managed to see 30 minutes of action before fouling out in the waning minutes.
Junior Breanna Bolden led the way offensively for the Cougars with 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from the line, but was limited in other facets of the game in which she normally excels (three rebounds, one steal). Senior Kelsey Booth was impactful with an eight-point, eight-rebound night.
The Cougars outperformed the Broncos from the line (70% vs. 61.5%), but were outshot from the field and beyond the arc, being held to 15-of-50 fand 1-of-10 respectively. The turnover discrepancy wasn't out of control (CofC 21, BSU 16), but the Broncos really shined in the assist department, more than doubling up on The College (18 vs. 7). Individually, Shalen Shaw led the way for the Broncos with an 18-9-4 performance with three steals and a block in 32 minutes of action.
“Boise State is such a good team,” Jackson said. “They're very well disciplined and they have a very good team chemistry. We just weren't able to stop the ball and slow down that penetration.”
The women of the Lowcountry will have to put this one out of their minds and move forward in short order. On Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST (7 p.m. MST), the College is slated for a showdown with the Weber State Wildcats (2-0).
