COLUMBIA, S.C. – College of Charleston women's tennis suffered a 5-0 loss at the hand of 22nd ranked South Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the USC Field House.
“South Carolina (6-2) is a great indoor team and they showed it today against us,” head coach Angelo Anastopoulo said.
The match marked the fourth nationally ranked team the Cougars (0-5) have played in a tough early season. Since Charleston does not have an indoor facility, Anastopoulo has purposefully scheduled several away matches at schools with indoor facilities so that his team can ready themselves for CAA opponents farther north.
“Although we have started a season out 0-5, we continue to get better each match. Hopefully this tough early schedule will help out when we get to CAA play,” Anastopoulo said.
Second-seeded sophomore Mara Argyriou was the bright spot for CofC, coming back from a 6-3 loss in the second set to capture the second set 6-4. Argyriou forced her opponent, Caroline Dailey to a tie break before Dailey became the eventual champion. Dailey is ranked 121st in the country by the ITA.
Senior Jenny Falcone also exhibited some fight at the No. 3 spot. She won three games in the second set after being swept in the first set, 6-0. Her opponent Brigit Folland was able to regain the edge and won the match in straight sets.
Senior Samantha Maddox faced nationally ranked opponents in both singles and doubles. After pairing with junior Brooke McAmis to take on the 46th ranked duo of Hadley Berg and Elixane Lechemia, she then had to face Lechemia again on court one. Lechemia, who is ranked 111th in the country, won her match 6-1, 6-3.
CofC returns home for a week of practice at Patriots Point Tennis Center before hitting the road next Saturday for a 10 a.m. match with East Carolina in Greenville, N.C.
