GREENVILLE, N.C. – College of Charleston women's tennis continued to battle through a tough season with a 4-1 loss to East Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the ECU Indoor Tennis Facility.
The loss marks the sixth straight for the Cougars who have played a stacked schedule with an emphasis on indoor matches to give the team an opportunity to practice in different conditions. Head coach Angelo Anastopoulo remains optimistic.
“East Carolina played very well today,” Anastopoulo said of the Pirates who move to 6-1 with the win. “I have a lot of confidence in our girls. We are doing everything we should be doing in practice and we just need to keep implementing those things in matches.”
Despite losing the doubles point with losses at the No. 2 and 3 seeds, Anastopoulo was particularly encouraged by the tenacity his team showed. Both teams were down 0-5 at one point before senior Samantha Maddox and junior Brooke McAmis won five games as the second seeded doubles team to push the Pirates duo Maria Gomez and Neena Wanko, who escaped with a narrow 7-5 win. On court three, Grace Baker and Sarah Jane Jones also came back from an 0-5 situation to win three games before eventually yielding a 6-3 decision to ECU's Dana Gray and Katie Hoch.
“We started the day incredibly slow in No. 2 and 3 doubles and I was proud that they continued fighting and showed a lot of character throughout it,” Anastopoulo said.
The Cougars' (0-6) lone point came from a three-set victory by junior Katherine Schofield at the No. 3 singles spot. After earning a 6-3 victory in the first set, Schofield hit a snag to lose the second set, 6-3. After regrouping, she coasted her way to a 6-0 third-set win to decide the match.
Top-seeded Maddox also played a three-set match in singles, forcing her opponent, Nicole LaDuca to a third set by rebounding from her first set 6-4 loss to earn a 6-3 win in the second set. LaDuca edged Maddox with a 7-6 win in the third set to take the match.
College of Charleston continues its road trip with its next stop in Williamsburg, Va. for its first CAA match against No. 55 William & Mary. Fans can follow the action live, beginning at 10:30 a.m., here: http://www.tribeathletics.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=25100&ATCLID=205987460
