CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston women's tennis came up just short of a victory for the second straight match in the team's 4-3 loss to East Tennessee State on Wednesday afternoon at Patriots Point Tennis Center.
“It's tough to lose 4-3 in back-to-back matches,” head coach Angelo Anastopoulo said. “ETSU really showed a lot of heart in coming back to win four out of the six singles matches after we had played so well in doubles.”
The Cougars (1-10, 0-1 CAA) won the doubles point for the second time this season. Senior Samantha Maddox and junior Brooke McAmis won their third straight match at the No. 2 spot with a 6-2 victory over Reginka Nychytailova and Jessica Brumit. On court three, sophomore Mara Argyriou and freshman Sara Jane Jones paired up for the second time this year to take a 6-3 victory over ETSU's Melissa Esguerra and Jayde Viccars and clinch the doubles point.
The Bucs (7-3) didn't stay down for long as they picked up two quick points with wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles. Senior Jenny Falcone fought off a late rally by her opponent Brumit to win her third straight match as the No. 4 seed in a tiebreak, 6-1, 7-6(5).
East Tennessee State clinched the match with wins on courts three and six. Junior Katherine Schofield edged her opponent, Augustina Amon, in the first set (7-5) on court three but was unable to hold onto the lead, dropping the next two sets 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Mara Argyriou capped off the day with a three-set victory to narrow the margin of victory.
Charleston returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Patriots Point. The Cougars will face Buffalo (4-4) at 10 am and old SoCon rival UNC Greensboro (4-4) at 3 pm. The Bulls have won two straight matches while the Spartans have dropped the last two matches. UNCG will play Charleston Southern on Thursday as the team continues its search for its first road win.
