MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston women's tennis hit its stride on Saturday as the Cougars picked up wins over Buffalo (4-3) and UNC Greensboro (6-1) in front of a home crowd at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
“The team did a great job in making my birthday special by picking up two victories,” said CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo about going 2-0 on his 48th birthday. “They played their heart out and did a terrific job.”
Rainy weather and wet courts delayed CofC's (3-10, 0-1 CAA) first match more than two hours. When Charleston and Buffalo (4-5) finally did take the courts, the Bulls took the early 1-0 lead with doubles wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. The Cougars responded by capturing singles wins on courts three through six to put them over the top with a 4-3 victory. Junior Katherine Schofield's three-set triumph at the No. 3 spot clinched the match for the Cougars.
“We showed a lot of heart in coming back after dropping the doubles point to Buffalo,” Anastopoulo said. “It was good to turn the tides and be on the winning side of a 4-3 match.” CofC had dropped two matches by the narrow margin earlier in the week.
Riding the momentum of the first win, the Cougars began their second match with old Southern Conference foe UNCG (4-6). CofC won the doubles point for just the third time this year with wins at the top two spots, giving Charleston a lead it wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the match.
Top-seeded junior Brooke McAmis cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over the Spartan's top player, Kayla Gammie, increasing the lead to 2-0. Schofield soon followed suit with her second singles win of the day on court three, picking up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Amy Ellis. Senior Samantha Maddox clinched the Cougars' second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot.
On court four, senior Jenny Falcone, who had earlier defeated her Buffalo opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, battled back from being down 5-2 in the first set to win the set in a tiebreak, 7-6(5). Her 6-3 second-set win gave her a 3-1 mark for the day. She and Schofield both finished the day by picking up two singles win and combining for a 6-3 doubles win in the top spot against UNCG's Gammie and Corinne Blythe.
Maddox also went 3-1 on the day, adding two doubles wins to her match-clinching singles victory. The Lexington, Ky. native paired up with freshman Helena Nyikos on court two to pick up the Cougars' sole doubles win against Bufalo, a 6-3 decision over Laura Fernandez and Laura Holterbosch. She then partnered with sophomore Mara Argyriou in the second match to defeat Soumeye Anane and Blaine Boaz, 6-1, as the second seed. Maddox has now won five doubles matches in the month of March with three different partners.
Every single member of the Charleston team won at least one match, either in singles or doubles competition, throughout the day. The team will now focus its attention to No. 15 Clemson, who will visit Patriots Point on Monday for a 2 pm match. The Tigers (8-5, 4-1 ACC) feature the top-ranked doubles team in the country in seniors Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies who are a perfect 10-0 on the season. The team is also comprised of the 24th and 43rd singles players in the nation in Joana Eldukonyte and Romy Koelzer, respectively. A BIRTHDAY STORY FROM HEAD COACH ANGELO ANASTOPOULO:
“Last year Ryan [Madden, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications] wanted to know what it was like to turn 47 and I replied that I was only three years away from getting the senior citizen discount at McDonald's. This morning, however, when I got my morning coffee at McDonald's on my 48th birthday, the cashier gave me the senior citizen discount without even asking!”
