CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston men's tennis will return to the courts of Patriots Point Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon for its fourth and final home match this month against CAA conference mate Elon.
The Cougars (11-5, 1-0 CAA) are familiar with the Phoenix (6-9, 1-0 CAA), as both teams competed in the Southern Conference before departing for the CAA in 2013. The teams last met in 2012, where CofC dropped a 4-3 decision to Elon in North Carolina.
Charleston is 2-1 at home in the month of March, picking up wins over Richmond (6-1) and UMBC (4-3). Sophomore Vasily Kichigin earned his second CAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week honor of the season last week, in recognition for his accomplishments in the Cougars' narrow loss to Middle Tennessee State and win over Richmond. Kichigin's 7-5, 6-3 win over UMBC's Melker Svard on court three clinched the match for CofC on Friday. He and senior Charlie Ghriskey lead Charleston with 11 wins apiece in singles.
Elon is coming off its first CAA win of the season, a 7-0 sweep of James Madison on Saturday. Senior Stefan Fortmann, whose four-match win streak contributes to his 8-5 record at the top singles spot for the Phoenix, leads the team. His country mate, South African freshman Josh Luck is also riding a four-match win streak, compiling a 7-6 record on courts one through five. Junior Robert Lindgren was selected the CAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week on March 11 for his performances against North Carolina Central and Georgia Southern at the No. 3 singles position.
Charleston Sports Network will air the doubles competition of Tuesday's match, which begins at 3 pm. Click Here to view the match.
