CHARLESTON, S.C. – The upcoming Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt on April 3-5 will serve as one final tune-up for the College of Charleston men's golf team, prior to defending its title at the 2015 CAA Championship at St. James Plantation towards the end of the month.
Three short days prior to the start of the 14-team tournament to be held at the par-71, 7,100-yard setup at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., the Cougars tied for fifth with No. 10-ranked Auburn, both teams shooting 8-under par at The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on March 31.
This year's Easter weekend tournament includes an equally loaded field of schools including host and No. 6 Vanderbilt, No. 27 Alabama, Ball State, No. 44 ETSU, No. 39 Georgia Southern, No. 15 Georgia Tech, Indiana, No. 21 Kennesaw State, Liberty, No. 49 Louisville, Mercer, Notre Dame and No. 24 SMU.
“The week continues with another strong field in Nashville,” CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. “We made a nice jump in the rankings after our last two tournaments (The Schenkel and The Hootie) and with another opportunity to continue to move up with the Mason Rudolph this week. We will be very close to the number we need to receive an at-large bid to NCAA Regionals.”
Starting for the Cougars will be reigning CAA Player of the Week Zach Munroe (Charlotte, N.C.), who carded a career-low, final-round 65 at The Hootie, junior Josh Lorenzetti (Blythewood, S.C.), sophomore Philip Oweida (Charlotte, N.C.), sophomore William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Anthony Gabriele (West Palm Beach, Calif.). Last year, CofC placed 10th at the tournament held just outside of Nashville.
“We made a change in the lineup this week as well,” McEntire said. “We are putting in William Rainey for John Jonas. Rainey played great in Nashville last year (CofC's second-best top finisher) for us and we look for him to do the same again this week – fingers crossed.”
Three 18-hole rounds will be played with fixed tee times each day off of the No. 1 and No. 10. Friday's opening round will begin at 8:30 a.m. (CT) / 9:30 a.m. (ET) and CofC will be paired with Mercer and Vanderbilt individuals.
