MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Despite trailing the Paladins the entire second half, a game-tying penalty kick by Leland Archer in the 87th minute helped The College (3-1-1) draw Furman Friday evening at Patriots Point.
“We went into the game knowing that we were going to have to work hard against this talented Furman team,” Archer said. “We needed to bring more energy tonight but we capitalized in certain situations and almost pulled out a great win. This California draw we have this upcoming weekend will give us an opportunity to play against some of the best teams in the country. My teammates and I are ready to rise to the challenge.”
With less than three minutes in regulation, Furman was called for a foul in the box, creating a penalty kick opportunity for sophomore defender Leland Archer. Archer buried a shot past Paladin goalkeeper Sven Lissek to tie the match at 1-1.
“We played without aggression in the first half and Furman really did us in,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “At halftime we made a great behavior adjustment. Of course the penalty kick energized and I really loved the way we played in overtime. The team stepped up. I was really disappointed in the first half and they realized they were playing without the aggressive commitment we have to have. We got better as the game went on.”
The Paladins dominated most of the contest with an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. Furman opened the second half capturing an early lead on one of their many scoring chances. A scramble in the box resulted in a rebound landing at the feet Bobby Edet and he found the back of the net in the 65th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Kevin Shields was impressive in his season debut for the Cougars tallying seven saves throughout the match. The Cougars best chance to score in the second overtime came on a breakaway by Adan Noel who was just wide with 1:47 left.
The Cougars will be back in action on the west coast when they face of against UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Sept. 18 and Cal-Poly on Sunday, Sept. 20.
