KERNERSVILLE, N.C. - The College of Charleston cross country program ran its final race of the regular season before the conference championships at the end of the month, with the women taking fourth and the men finishing 12th at High Point University's VertCross Invitational.
"Both teams have worked hard through a heavy workload this week," head coach Amy Seago said. "There were several bright spots for us today, and I was pleased with our performance. We're definitely going to focus on getting our legs back underneath us in time for conference."
Tori Churchill made it five races in a row that she's finished first among the Cougars in what's been an outstanding junior year. The native of Greensboro finished 12th overall with a time of 21:59.57. Behind her, Ellen Feringa moved up another spot to seventh on the CofC All-Time Top 10 list, surpassing Haley McMahon (22:07.16) with a 17th place time of 22:06.51. Carlee Cassidy was right on her heels in 19th with a time of 22:09.27.
Marissa Small-Towns crossed the finish-line fourth for the Cougars in 47th, shaving five seconds off of her previous personal best 6K time with a mark of 23:00.64. Cara Butcher rounded out the scoring for the women, and in her first race-action in over a month, clocked a 54th place time of 23:14.04. With 118 team points, the women finished just nine points shy of third-place Richmond.
Hayden DiBona paced the College for the second straight week, finishing 51st overall (26:14.86), and Sam Beattie registered a career performance behind him with a PR of 26:28.89, taking 71st. Crew Kosiorek was not far behind with a time of 26:38.26, but it was Logan Veatch who really busted out, scoring for the Cougars with a 125th overall performance (27:19.10). Grant Gauthier rounded things out in 133rd (27:29.89).
"Sam and Logan both had breakthrough races, and I was really happy with how Tori, Ellen and Carlee worked together," Seago said.
With the regular season complete, the Cougars will now shift their sites to the post-season, which starts with the CAA Championships at White Clay State Park in Newark, Del. That race is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29.
