Cougars Survive Late Push, Fouls in 65-62 Win Over App State

BOONE, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (2-3) staved off a second half surge from Appalachian State (3-3) on Sunday, managing to hold on through a medley of foul calls to preserve the 65-62 win.

• The College came out red-hot in the first half, scoring 13 of the first 14 points of the game and pushing the lead as high as 22 in the second quarter. All five CofC starters had found points in just the first two minutes of the game. Darien Huff was a huge contributor for the Cougars, scoring all 11 of her points in the opening half on a perfect 3 of 3 shooting. The Cougars entered the locker room with 37-20 lead.

• The officials had let the players play through the first half, but that all changed in the third quarter. 23 fouls were assessed to both teams combined in the third quarter, 11 more fouls than had been called (12) in the entire first half. That trend continued in the fourth, and the foul-differential ended up at 31 on CofC compared to 20 against Appalachian State. Five players, four of whom were Cougars, fouled out of the contest.

Tanisha Brown came up huge for the Cougars with another double-double, scoring 17 points and ten rebounds. Shiclasia Brown meanwhile dished a game-high five assists, and scored the final two free throws of the game to secure the lead for the Cougars and force App State into a desperation three at the finale of the game.

Breanna Bolden stuffed the stat-sheet with 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal. She moves past former teammate Alyssa Frye (2010-14) as well as Tonia Gerty (2007-11) to move to 16th on the CofC All-Time scoring list. Her career-point total stands at 1225.

• The Mountaineers scored 25 points in the third quarter, five more than they scored in the first half. Even though ASU managed to close the deficit to one, the College managed to emerge with the win thanks to a superior shooting night. Not only did the Cougars shoot 25 of 60 from the field for 41.7% to Appalachian State's 19 of 62 for 30.6%, but the Mountaineers shot themselves in the foot by not capitalizing on their ample free throw opportunities, going 23 of 41 from the stripe. Joi Jones scored a career-high 29 points, while Bria Carter tallied an impressive 14-14 double-double in defeat.

The Cougars will return to action for their third home game of the season Wednesday, when they host the UNF Ospreys (4-3) at 6:30 p.m. in TD Arena.
