WHAT HAPPENED
College of Charleston redshirt freshman guard Grant Riller scored a game-high 22 points in his return to the lineup which led to a 118-67 rout of Allen (S.C.) University in exhibition play on Friday night at TD Arena.
THE ORLANDO CONNECTION
Orlando natives Joe Chealey (17 points) and Riller (22 points) combined for 39 of the team's 118 points versus Allen. Both missed the 2015-16 season due to preseason injuries and are former hometown stars at Apopka High School and Ocoee High School respectively.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Sophomore Jarrell Brantley recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds against Allen. Last season, he turned in five double-double performances and earned CAA Rookie of the Year honors.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
7 – Number of players in double figures for the Cougars (Riller, Chealey, Brantley, Jaylen McManus (13), Chevez Goodwin (12), Payton Hulsey (10), Cameron Johnson (11))
10 – Number of three-pointers made in the ballgame including a trey by senior walk-on Erik Goldbach
26 – Number of assists against Allen
64.2% – The Cougars' shooting percentage from the field (43-of-67)
COUGARS HIT CENTURY MARK
The Cougars last hit the century mark with a 102-87 exhibition win over Newberry during the 2013-14 season. If the exhibition game officially counted in the CofC record books, this year's squad would've tied the 1973 squad for the fourth-highest point total in school history.
1. 145 – 1973
2. 130 – 1973
3. 119 – 1971
4. 118 – 1973 and 2016
NOTABLE QUOTABLES
"Our guys came out with a good approach. A lot of times you play an exhibition game, you wonder if the guys will be locked up and focused. It took us a while to get going and get ourselves established in the first 10-12 minutes of the game. I was really proud of how unselfish our guys were tonight with 26 assists. They did a great job of spreading the ball around and passing to their teammates. In the second half, we got back to playing sound defense in the half court. I was proud of their attention to detail, making adjustments at halftime and executing our game plan in the second half." – CofC Head Coach Earl Grant
"It felt amazing to be out there with my teammates again. They had faith in me throughout the whole (recovery) process. It feels good to be back out there with them." – CofC Redshirt Freshman Guard Grant Riller
SERIES NOTES
The Cougars now lead 15-1 in the all-time series with Allen since 1971. They have won the last six-consecutive meetings between the two schools. CofC is also 3-0 in exhibition games in the Earl Grant Era.
