CofC Rewrites Relay Record at UNCW Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The College of Charleston track & field team wrapped up a successful first meet to their outdoor season Saturday, which was highlighted by the shattering of a school record out on the track.
Entering their first short relay of the 2016 campaign, the Cougars found monumental success. A squad consisting of two freshman, Timesha Moody, Deanna King, Brianna Lewis and Kennay Agnew teamed up to absolutely smash the CofC school record in the event. Crossing the finish line second overall with a time of 47.62, the quartet shaved over a second off the previous record set two years ago.
The sprinters found success elsewhere on the day. Agnew finished sixth in the 400m dash with a time of 58.49 in her outdoor debut, launching her up to No. 5 on the CofC All-Time list. Moody earned a pair of top-ten finishes in both the 100m and 200m dashes finishing sixth (12.65) and ninth (26.43) respectively.
Lewis captured second in 400m hurdles with a time of 1:08.79 (No. 8 in CofC History), just ahead of Katherine Linn, who took third with a time of 1:09.11 (No. 10 in CofC History). In the shorter 100m hurdles, Rachel Leder, Alexia Neal and Jenny Martin took third, fourth and fifth. Martin logged a time of 15.23, which raises her to No. 6 in the event in the history of the College.
The College went on to fare well in the distance events. Carlee Cassidy finished in first place with a time of 6:54.01 in the miniature 2000m version of the steeplechase. Running the mile, Tori Churchill and Ellen Feringa finished first and second in the event with times of 5:13.86 and 5:18.49. Had it been an indoor time, Churchill's effort would have ranked her No. 7 in CofC History. Marissa Small-Towns delivered a strong third place performance in the 800m run with a time of 2:17.72.
The College only competed in two field events on the day, but yielded strong results in both. In the shot put, Sarah Lynch added 57cm to her PR in the form of a 11.15m effort to take second, raising her to No. 5 in CofC History. Brianna McDonald (11.04m) finished right behind her in third. In the discus, Alex Coyle (36.03m) and freshman Courtney Brooks (35.20m) finished third and fourth. The newcomer's toss advances her to No. 8 on the school's all-time list.
Next up for the Cougars, they'll remain on the Carolina Coast, but bring things closer to home when they head to Coastal Carolina for the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational. That meet is slated to kick off on Thursday, March 17, and run through Saturday, March 19.
